Microtel Disc Golfer of the Week John Bird PDGA #: 387
As PDGA Membership numbers rocket past 30,000, we often sit up and take notice when we see someone who has a number less than 13,000. But what about a PDGA member in the 300's? What can someone with such a low PDGA number possibly still be offering to the sport?
Well, in the case of John Bird (PDGA #: 387) the answer is still quite a bit!
Described by nominating PDGA member Marsha Fisher (PDGA #: 26045) as "the face of disc golf in Colorado," John Bird has long dedicated himself to the sport. In fact, there are nary a few places you can play disc golf in Colorado where players do NOT have a story to share about their PDGA State Coordinator, John Bird. He seems to be everywhere throughout the state, despite his full-time job during the week.
What may be perhaps the best symptom of John Bird's influence on disc golf in the Rockies is a course in Arvada, CO known as the "Bird's Nest Disc Park." Yes...the Arvada, CO Parks and Recreation community have been so impressed by John's tireless dedication to disc golf, that they have dedicated the name of the course to him. Word has it that he is working on another course with the Boulder County Parks and Recreation Department. No news on the naming of it yet.
John Bird, we salute you for your outstanding work towards making our sport, and the people in our sport, better! And while your disc golf resume is impressive indeed, you refuse to rest on your laurels, leaving me only to wonder if it is in fact better to have a bird in the hand, instead of the bush...especially if that bird in the bush is John Bird working on a disc golf course in Colorado! Congratulations John Bird on being named the Microtel Disc Golfer of the Week.
