Microtel Disc Golfer of the Week Joe Anttila, PDGA #: 28709
During Joe's travels from Michigan to Arizona for the Amateur side of The Memorial, he found himself at the scene of what ended up being a deadly car crash somewhere between Scottsdale and the skiing areas of Flagstaff.
Though Joe could have easily ventured back to the tournament central to enjoy the company of his friends and festive setting without any recourse to driving by the pile-up, he opted instead to stop and see how he could help.
Despite Joe's best efforts administering CPR and providing comfort to the victims of the crash, both passengers were mortally wounded and died on the scene.
Clearly shaken, Joe gathered up all his strength and did return to play in The Memorial. His game was understandably not at its best, and after Friday and Saturday he found himself near the bottom of the Intermediate Division.
Any doubts that Joe had about gutting out the final round on Sunday were dashed Saturday evening, as he received word that his grandmother back in Michigan had passed away earlier in the day. Like the good man that he is, Joe traveled back to his family to mourn their loss.
Joe Anttila might not be a long-standing member of the PDGA or a well-known volunteer for our association. He is also not the best player out of over 7,600 current members. What Joe does have, though, that helped him capture the first Microtel Disc Golfer of the Week Award is a passion for the game that lead him to travel to the Arizona desert. But, more importantly, Joe has a proper perspective of where disc golf fits into his life.
When the time came, after weeks of planning the trip to be with friends and play disc golf, Joe made the decision to, first, sacrifice his personal enjoyment at the tournament to help out a couple who were in critical need of his assistance. Secondly, when Joe's family needed him most he returned to them without completing the event.
Congratulations Joe Anttila for your courage and selflessness. You have helped us all keep things in proper perspective with your actions off the course.
Anttila was nominated by Joe Wander (PDGA #: 10979), who reminded us when nominating Anttila, "if growth comes from adversity, [Joe's] a bigger man now than he was a few days ago."
